Summary of case
Sue Rodriguez was a 42 year old woman suffering from ALS, a terminal disease the slowly destroys the body’s nerves and shuts down all of its function. For Sue the disease had progressed to the point where she could no longer perform everyday tasks she once could such as, picking up a fork, eating cereal and taking a shower. To deal with this, sue hired a personal assistant to help her eat, bathe and sleep. Sue knew that the disease would eventually cause her to lose control of the muscles in her throat and lead to a horrible death, so she fought to have the right to a doctor assisted suicide. Though she lost, her case motivated numerous people to argue against the law and brought the topic to light, leading to its eventual legalization. Another reason it is a precedent setting case is because the vote was very close. In this case, Sue lost due to a single vote meaning that there were many people who supported her and considered this an important law to get rid of. Another reason this case was precedent setting was because the law violated numerous charter rights and was a serious issue. Sue lost the case but had an anonymous doctor help her commit suicide. After this case was presented, the government had various meetings and debates on whether or not the law should really exist. Aside from the governments meeting there were lots of people protesting the decision to keep the law, pressuring the government to come to a conclusion and get rid of it. The decision of this case has impacted Canadians everywhere as assisted suicide is no longer illegal, meaning that those who are suffering through a terminal illness, and are in pain everyday, can ask a doctor to help end their suffering. This decision also secures the charter rights of disabled and non-disabled
