Super Immunity by Joel Fuhrman, M.D., couldn’t be a more relevant and relatable book and debatable a way of life. Before reading this book I have learned a lot about hormones and nutritional knowledge within sport science and medicine but neglected to look elsewhere because I am young and don’t really appreciate all the information out there. This assignment has forced me to look into something different and I am very glad that I have. Just like the personal examples that Dr. Fuhrman presents in the book, my perspective about nutrition has changed and even my habits as well. Joel gives incredible knowledge that is extremely new and can change millions of people lives. Super Immunity offers information about the immune system that ranges from …show more content…
For one thing it is scary that the majority of the population has not even heard this word before. Phytochemicals are any of various biologically active compounds found in plants, this can mean a lot and it does. One big claim that the author takes is that “a phytochemically deficient diet is largely responsible for a weak immune system.” He further explains that antioxidant and phytochemicals are responsible for removing free radicals. Free radicals are bad because they contain high chemically reactive molecules. Without antioxidants and phytochemicals, the free radicals create negative impacts like premature aging and inflammation. He goes on further to give other example of how phytochemicals are truly important including: “deactivating and detoxicating cancer- causing agents, fueling mechanisms to repair damaged DNA sequences, impeding the replication of cells with DNA damage and improving immune cells’ cytotoxic (destructive) power-that is, the power to kill microbes and cancer cells(Fuhrman,20).” Hearing this information definitely had me shocked and a little unbelievable but throughout this presented information there are studies and statistics that he …show more content…
Fuhrman takes very much about how you can improve your immune system, after all the book is labeled, Super Immunity”. In the book he explains how you can improve your immunity against the common cold to even cancer. One statistic that he shares is that, “Between 1935 and 2005, cancer rates rose every single year for seventy years straight! As processed foods and fast foods expanded into the underdeveloped world, we saw rural areas starting to develop higher rates of cancer and obesity( Fuhrman,23).” It’s embarrassing that as technology as technology has expanded our rates of cancer have gone up. What he explains later though shows why underdeveloped places increased in rates of health problems. Next Joel talks about how countries like america have came to focus really hard on counting calories and macronutrients but it has given people health problems. He says that we all need to focus on counting micronutrients, vitamins and minerals. We should be focusing nutrient dense foods instead of easy cheap calorie dense foods. Places before fast foods were eating more phytochemical and nutrient dense diet by eating what they could afford: grains, fruits and vegetables. Before reading this book, I didn’t care about eating healthy but now I am very interested. He has taught that by focusing on finding those phytochemicals in plants and vitamins and minerals you can solve issues like type 2 diabetes where he presents a statistic that explains that patients were given a drug that
