Behind the Glasses. What truly lies beneath a nerd everyone assumes to be a freak. Tangerine by Edward Bloor is a story about a 12 year old boy named Paul who recently moved to Tangerine county with his family, where nothing is what it seems, especially to his visually impaired eyes. Paul develops new differences and changes to his life, living among unusual occurrences. Paul is anticipated to be a kid who imagines impractical happenings to be true due to his weak vision. The assumption is not only made by people around him that look at his thick glasses, but his parents. For instance, on page 4, Paul says, “But I can see. I can see everything. The story to his glasses. Paul was five years old when he was accused for telling about Eric and his friend: Vincent Castor spray painting the walls. The innocence of Paul wasn't desirable by Eric or his self-minded friend when Paul was sprayed in the eyes, by them. Paul’s parents knew the truth all along, but keeping it from Paul brought in the picture of how they reasoned the truth with their son, a visually impaired boy that figured out something they couldn't keep from him (Tangerine, December 1). After the movement of school and natural disasters, Paul had found soccer friends at Tangerine Middle who had something greater to offer and acknowledge about Paul. They made him feel special, which Paul has never deeply encountered with his life in the shadow of his brother. He felt different and developed courage along the roots of the soccer players in Tangerine Middle. One example was during Paul’s last game played at Tangerine Middle School. Paul states, “Maybe I am just a sub, maybe I am just along for the ride, but this is the greatest thing that has ever happened to me (pg. 170, November 2).” This displayed an affection to Paul. A feeling to what he was really part of and not just a team or sub, but a friend, true being, and ignoring the thick glasses that everyone saw of
