Richie an African American teenagers who graduated from high school in Harlem, New York. After high school Richie wants to go to Vietnam to fight in the United States Army. Fallen Angels is historically accurate fiction because this book isn’t true but it relates to the characteristics of the Vietnam War, Walter Dean Myers was in the military. The theme of this book is youth and innocence. The four characters are young and don’t really know what to expect when they arrive in the Vietnam War.
In the novel Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers, the main character is Richard Perry. In the beginning of this book, Richard was a generous and eager to start as a soldier in the Vietnam War. He soon becomes responsible and understanding of what it is like to be a black soldier in the war and how hard it can be to the other soldiers. Near the end, Richard becomes powerful and alerted near the end of the book. This character clearly relates to the theme of the book, which is age and race can impact somebody’s life a lot.
His 24-month long mission gave him the opportunity to use his journalism and educational experiences to cover the important roles that African American soldiers were playing in the Vietnam War. The military’s goal in this assignment was to show the American people and potential African American soldiers that African American soldiers were now treated equally. There was a stigma regarding the maltreatment of African Americans in the military, and with the passing of the Civil Rights Bill of 1964, the image of the African American soldier began to quickly change. The new breed of African American soldiers no longer tolerated bigotry and hatred. African American soldiers began uniting to combat the injustices in America as well as within the military overseas.

The Story Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers is a story that takes place in the Vietnam War. The story is told from a man named Richie Perry and his experience from the war. Perry will tell the his story and how the war strain you physically and mentally. Jenkins n the story was a young man following his father wishes about being a officer even if he was completely terrified. His death even at the end of the story effected Perry.
In the beginning of the novel, Perry was an uncertain teen who didn’t know where his place in life was “The real question was what I was doing, what any of us were doing, in Nam” (69). By the middle of the book, Perry started to become doubtful of himself and started to say Jenkins and Carroll died because of him “In a way i felt real bad just for being alive to write it” (110). And by the last few chapters he really starts to lose his way and lose his judgement from right and wrong “Maybe when we all got back to the world and everybody thought we were heroes for winning it, then it would seem right from there” (229). During my reading of Fallen Angels, I began to notice the theme, and I think the theme is that War is devastating to people because it can totally mess you up psychologically and physically.

In my research based outside of the book, I discovered that several of the characters in the novel are based on real historical figures. Those characters include, General Robert E. Lee, commander of the Confederate army; General James Longstreet, Lee’s second in command; and Union Colonel Joshua L. Chamberlain, who participated in one of the most famous segments of the Battle of Gettysburg,

The two protagonists of these stories are told by Colonel Moore and Richie Perrie. In the stories Fallen Angels and We Were Soldiers, we will follow the development of our protagonists Richie Perry and Colonel Moore.
The Killer Angels, by Michael Shaara, is a riveting and masterly crafted novel that provides multiple inside perspectives of the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War. The book can easily be read and comprehended by teenagers. Shaara uses many different methods that can keep high school students engaged in the book and also highlight many aspects of wars they might not have previously known. Shaara includes perspectives of multiple different generals, colonels, and soldiers fighting on both sides of the wars. The book stays engaging because readers are provided with the inside thoughts of the different generals which helps readers learn why the decisions during the battle were made and also makes the characters more relatable and real.
Although the soldier he killed was an enemy soldier, instead of vilifying him he was able to humanize the man. O’Brien was able to describe the physical appearance of the soldier and imagine her life before war. The author was able to portray an emotional connection and made the line between friend and enemy almost vanish. This was able to reveal the natural beauty of shared humanity even in the context of war’s horror. O’Brien is able to find the beauty in the midst of this tragic and horrible event.
Charles Fuller’s A Soldier’s Play explores the struggle of a black sergeant who in conflict with his racial identity. In WW2, it was rare for a colored man to hold a position of power in the military. At the time, many African-Americans were unable to fight at all. Sgt. Waters becomes one of the few to break the chain, yet he acts as if he is white himself.
While the effort of America was important in winning the war, there was a lot of discrimination and prejudice against blacks, Native Americans, women, and homosexuals within the military. The men who fought in the war saw terrible conditions and many had mental breakdowns. This chapter in the book explains the deaths that many soldiers witnessed and how many men became separated from humanity. This caused many soldiers to become insane. The final two chapters in the book talk about changes in the American society throughout the war and the results from the war.
Mark Bowden writes an epilogue of “young soldiers he interviewed whose ‘experiences of battle, unlike that of any other generation of American soldiers, was colored by a lifetime of watching the vivid gore of Hollywood action movies.’” (Valby). So, the value many Morongo high school students received is due to the teachings from the book Black Hawk Down, which makes students prepared for the future since they can start thinking about how they can protect the country and fight for their freedom. Nationalistic, academic, and social events taught, tell students that this book prepares them for any future or success.
