“Unhappy in Uniform,” an article by Lifeisabeach, Eau Claire, WI, discusses the cause of school uniforms must be abolished from policy of education in America. In 1800s, school uniforms in the West appeared to displace the disorderly look in school at the time, and then America followed it. The author indicates that school uniform is rated unjust and make their ability to express their personality, creativity and personal preferences is stifled. She also states that uniforms have small impact to reduce crime or increase good behavior, then academic accomplishment and cosiness will be ruined, so students cannot focus on their duty. Probably because of her article’s proofs were inconvincing and most of the information in this article were not …show more content…
But, I don't feel the same with the author. I strongly believe that giving students too much freedom in dress code will cause unnecessary problems, such as fighting, stress, and bullying because their clothes can mark them down as rich or poor. Moreover, this can't prevent people from serving them alcohol, because it doesn't show their age, so having similar clothes will also prevent students from teasing each other. By putting them in school uniforms, the older looking children then can't pretend to be older than they are. Besides, students who don't put on cloths that are considered to be fashionable feel ridiculed and pressured because their parents cannot afford to buy them nice cloths (Bearne, 1994). So, introduction of school uniforms would reduce the importance of status and release the stress off children from lower class families (Alexander, 1999). Same clothing will also contribute to the team building and feeling of dignity for being the students of a certain educational institution. As a suggestion, if children want to get more freedom of expressiveness, they can put on what they consider fashion during their free time i.e. after school. Students can also express their individuality in school uniforms by adding accessories. Students can wear a variety of expressive items, such as buttons or jewelry, it means uniforms don't stop students from being themselves …show more content…
I disagree with this. I reckon uniforms are responsible for a better learning environment in school. This is based on the fact students spend less time looking at their mode of dressing and not on who is putting on what fashion, thus focusing more school work, as opposed to a new fashion trend (Clinton, 2008). According to Hammons (2010), “Uniforms provide for less distraction, less drama, and more of a focus on learning," (p.70). For example, schools in Hongkong, Taiwan, and Japan that have uniforms have the best test scores internationally. A study composed by Virginia Draa of Youngstown State University found a positive correlation between uniform and the improvement in graduation and attendance rates among 6 schools in Ohio City. She saw that when students were forced to wear a uniform to school their graduation rates increased to 11% where as non-uniform public schools had graduation rates drop 4%. Besides, after uniforms were introduced, elementary school girls’ language test scores increased about 3%, based on University of Houston study (Gentile,
