Francis Chan once wrote, "True love is about sacrifice for the sake of the ones you love." This quotation is base on the bible verse 1 John 3:16, which says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Indeed true love comes with a sacrifice. Walter Wetherell’s short story “The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant” is a good example of a love sacrifice in which a fourteen-year-old boy who is in love with his sixteen-year-old neighbor, Sheila Mant. He has a serious crush on her and is thrilled when she accepts his offer of a date. In this story the main character goes from loving fishing to pretending not to care about fishing when he finds out that his date thinks that fishing is dumb and lose the biggest bass he ever seen due to a date with a girl which demonstrates the theme of the story, which is the fact that love comes with a sacrifice.

As they were reaching the point where they would get off the boy was hoping the big bass would get lose, but it wouldn’t, so he finally decided and cut the rod string with his pocket knife and let the bass lose. He boy sacrificed the big bass for the girl. This was the biggest bass the boy has ever seen and he just let is lose, because the he knew that this girl was like no other.
