The author Jonathan Edwards delivers a sermon called "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" is a colonial piece talking about how God will be angry with you if you don't listen to him. Throughout the book, Douglass shares his experiences to show how the white slave owners abused the bible. The slave owners who participated in religious activities were the ones who treated slaves the worst. Douglass had a slave owner named Mr. Auld who possessed cruel, hypocritical characteristics. Mr. Auld was a discriminative man that did not allow his slaves to have a freedom of religion. During Douglass’s time with Mr. Auld, Douglass attended a Sabbath school which taught slaves how to read the bible.
Have you ever been deathly afraid of something or someone? If so, then you have experienced some of the emotions that the audience endured during the sermon, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God. This is written by the great theologian Jonathan Edwards. It is recorded that many screamed in terror when Edwards was giving this approximately six hour long sermon. This sermon given in a level voice manor was delivered in 1741 as a piece of oratory.
The author appeals to his audience’s emotion when writing this sermon. Specifically, he targets
“As surely as each of them brought a toothbrush with him, he also brought with him his loves and hates, his fears of death and his fears of life, his anxieties, his longings, his pride his doubts…and so did the one who traveled to New Haven to hear them lecture.” This statement from page three of Telling the Truth left me naked and vulnerable as I continued to read the following words of this brilliant work by Fredrick Buechner. As a young college student, pursing ministry, I can’t help but be challenged as I read recognize my self in these words. Every time I get up to preach, I bring with me the world that lives inside of me, and so does everyone who is listening. I am speaking to broken hearts, different personalities and family situations, people who are experiencing extreme financial and marriage trials.

He identifies the most important biblical images for African Americans, Exile, Exodus, Ethiopia, and Emmanuel and discusses their recurrence and the relationship they have with African Americans and African American culture.
The Puritans were proud people, who formed their church in the 16th century. The English Revolution, also known as the Puritan Revolution, caused them to separate from the Church of England. By the 17th century they became pilgrims, and started the Great Awakening. Literary analysis of “The sinners in the hands of an angry god” The great awakening was a religious revival that occurred in the 1730s and 1740s. It started in England and then gradually made its way over to the American colonies. During this time, many different preachers and religious speakers went around and gave speeches to the people. Jonathan Edwards was one of Americas most important and original philosophical theologians who also went around and gave speeches about God and hell.
God Gives Us Free Will Jonathan Edwards preaches that if people follow God and obey him they will experience his great mercy. “Sinners in The Hands of an Angry God,” he explains this concept in his sermon. Most people back in 1741 and to this day would be persuaded by his sermon about the Lord because of how passionately and strongly he spoke about his beliefs’. In this sermon Edwards refers to Gods everlasting wrath. He describes Gods anger towards those who do not follow and believe in Him.
Book Review: Sons of Cain a. Overview Sons of Cain, by Peter Vronsky, is a book that focuses on serial killers dating back from the stone age to modern day serial killers. Not only does the book talk about specific killers, but it also slightly talks about the criminal theory behind some of the killers and their tactics/motives. Vronsky has written the book objectively, he mentions how many cases of serial killing and other severe crimes are not taught fully in schools, because it would shed a bad light on certain countries, specifically ours. b. Purpose Vronsky’s purpose in writing this book was to shed light on well-known-- and lesser known-- serial killers, as well as providing reasoning and possible explanations as to why they killed.
Evangelical preachers, in keeping with their social doctrine that targeted the disadvantaged in society, attempted to convert slaves and Native Americans. Prior to the Awakening no one had made a serious effort at their conversion for fear that Christianity was “a step towards freedom” (357). Slaves attended evangelical sermons en masse, wary of the Anglican ministers who supported their masters. Evangelical Christianity offered moments of release and equality from the perpetual suffering of a slave’s life. This did not mean, however, that the evangelists actively opposed slavery.
On July 8, 1741 Jonathan Edwards delivered the sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” During this time many people were moving away from their Puritan beliefs and did not make God a priority. In the message he talked about how everyone was a sinner and how everyone belongs in hell. He also talked about how if God wanted to He would throw everyone in Hell, but since He gave us His Son we should take Him and repent. While delivering this message many people began to repent and ask for forgiveness.
