Kiera Cass is the author of the well known book The One which is the third book to the selection series. The One is about a young girl, America who falls in love with the prince, Maxon while she is in the selection. The selection is a competition between 35 girls to see who will be Maxon’s wife and the future queen. Things are looking good for America, even though she is in caste five, the castes are where you live and what your job is. Some people don’t think she is fit to be the queen just because of her caste, my theme is no matter what situation a person is born into, they should be given an equal opportunity to strive for what they want to achieve. From the very beginning, the author's description and word choice shows how equality is important in her book. Some of the girls in the book take what they have for granted when other impoverished people cherish what little they have. A quote from the end of the book is “ I want to start from the bottom. I’m planning on eliminating the eight label first.” In this book, castes are seen more as labels for people instead of just seeing it as just where they live and work. Another quote is “There’s got to be a way to get rid of the stigmas that come along with the numbers.” Some of the people with better caste numbers don’t like the people with bad caste numbers just because they don’t have as much money as they do. The worst caste you could be in is the eighth caste, these people don’t have a lot, and some people discriminate against them because they don’t meet “their standards”.
