The Road takes place in a post-apocalyptic scenario. Throughout the book, the man and the boy go unnamed. The man is the boy's father, known as Papa, and believes that the boy is sent to him from God. It seems as if the boy is the man's sole reason for living. Throughout the first half of the book, the man and boy travel looking for any means of survival. Humanity is strongly maintained throughout their journey. The fact that the two characters were always starving and held a noncannibalistic attitude is astonishing. Actions depicted by several of the characters that the two encounter on their travel suggests that most of the remaining population had lost any sense of compassion.
