Imagine having to leave a location that has been your hometown forever. Also imagine living in a place that is so violent, you could feel the chaos from a mile away. Beli shows extreme hatred to the Dominican Republic where she was born. The Dominican Republic swallowed Beli into this deep dark hole. She can’t escape it even if she wanted to. She hates the drama, the unnecessary conflicts, and the violence. In fact she hates it so much that she decide to leave the Dominican Republic. All she wanted in her life was to be happy, but that’s not easy if she does not leave the Dominican Republic. First, she gets fired from her work. Beli was rude to her aunt in public. Jose, her boss at Palacio Peking tells Beli that she had to leave. Jose fires Beli from the restaurant and tells her to “leave [her] apron on the counter” (Diaz 129). The fact that Beli got fired from her job shows that she is destined not to become happy because she embarrassed herself in front of everyone. Even her coworkers didn’t want to talk to her at all. She was alone now, out of a job, and depressed. In addition, her unborn son dies. After The Gangster’s wife kidnap Beli, they beat her so badly that her unborn son dies. She survived, desperate to find out about what happened to her unborn child. Beli was so devastated by her unborn child’s death that she starts to cry to her mom, “They killed [her] bebe” (Diaz 153). Although, Beli survived, her only hope has vanished just like a thin air into space. She was so happy when the doctor told her that she was pregnant and now she has to hear this. She was crying and screaming so loud that they threatened to make her leave. In conclusion, Beli loses the two most important things that she has. She loses her job first then her unborn child. Decisions that Beli make alters her destiny. First, back a little while ago, she decided not to go to school anymore. Beli was being criticized for sleeping with a guy in the schools closet. The next, to save herself from embarrassment, not only did she not want to go to a different school, but also she didn’t want to go to any school again. Beli, intimidated by what other people might say about her, she tells La Inca that “[She’s] not going back to school. Not ever” (Diaz 103). The fact that Beli decided not to go to school demonstrates how the decision she make alters her destiny because if she kept going to school, she might realize what her destiny is. If she hadn’t decided not to go to school, she wouldn’t have met Constantina who took her to a club where she met The Gangster. If she hadn’t met The Gangster, her life wouldn’t have been miserable. In addition, she decides to leave the Dominican Republic. After Beli’s unborn child dies, she starts to break apart. The goons that tried to kill her were coming back so she had to leave. Beli thinks that she deserves to be happy and that Santo Domingo has ruined her life. She decides that “[She] never want to see it again” (Diaz 163). Beli don’t want to be in Bani ever again, which proves how the decision she make alters her destiny because the happiness that she deserves might be waiting for her.
