I expected it to be about a boy who steals books to live and pay off his family's debt. 4. Liesel: Liesel is the absolute main character of this book. She is a bright young girl even though she has little education. She is a lover of books.
This devastating, while enlightening novel has a tremendous plot that is skillfully written and played out. In January of 1939, Liesel Meminger’s brother dies and she moves in with her foster parents, Hans and Rosa Hubermann on Himmel Street. Hans is the first to create a close bond with Liesel when he teaches her how to roll a cigarette and plays the accordion for her when she wakes up from her nightmares about her late brother. Liesel lacks an education and does not know how to read, however Hans teaches her how to read and write, improving her skills. As “a suggestion,” she lets Liesel explore the library “with wonder” anytime she wants (133, 134). Though Liesel accepts without question, Ilsa knows the feeling of losing someone so close as she lost her son so she believes she can give Liesel happiness through books. While discovering the library, Liesel asks about Johann Hermann, but quickly apologizes and “[Let’s] the sentence die its own death” realizing the pain brought upon Ilsa (144). Although the action is not fully returned from Liesel, Ilsa continues to trust Liesel in her library as she sees the pleasure reading brings her.

One of the most important recurring themes throughout The Book Thief was Liesel’s relationships with all of the people in her life. She grows close with several different people, and trusts, loves, and cares for them all differently but equally. Three of those relationships will be explored more deeply; Liesel’s relationship with her foster father, Hans Hubermann, the Jewish man her family takes in, Max Vanderburg, and her best friend, Rudy Steiner. Liesel’s relationship with Hans is one of the most important, if not the most important, relationships in the novel. Hans is the first person Liesel trusts, and the person who stays with her and loves her until the end.
