In this roller coaster ride of a short story called, “The Chase” by Annie Dillard, there are many events happening.” The Chase” is about a seven-year-old girl who finds at no matter what age, there's a child in everyone. Dillard gets together with some friends on a day of a fresh snow fall when they find some unexpected fun. Dillard and her friends shortly learn that there can be excitement when it comes to throwing snowballs. Just after Christmas an abundance of snow is falling so much snow that “we were standing up to our boot tops in it” (123). Dillard is hanging out with a few boys that live near her by Reynolds Street. Two of the older boy’s names are Mikey and Peter Fahey. Anyone could tell by the way it looks outside that there is a bunch of snow because “it was cloudy and cold” (123). Dillard and the boys agree that it wasn’t an okay thing to throw at people or things although “it had been known to happen” (123). Mikey and Dillard run for ten blocks, through different backyards, snowy steps and streets only to be caught by barely by their jackets. Dillard refers to the man as a “hero” (124) in her eyes. She realizes that everyone, no matter your age, still have a child in them. Once the man caught them they all stood around, breathing heavily, trying to catch their breaths. Nobody is even able to speak for the longest time. Finally the man catches his breath and begins to speak. The first thing he says is “you stupid kids” (125). While the man is yelling at them; all Dillard can think about is how much fun she is having. She doesn't want the day to end; Excitement that Dillard has never felt before has been found in typical child’s play. She wishes there was a way to continue being chased and feel more
