The short story “The Cold Equations” by Tom Godwin explains sacrifice throughout the story. In the beginning, Maryland made a sacrifice to see her brother who she hasn't seen in awhile “...I haven't seen him for so long, i didn't want to wait another year when I could see him now…” when she said this she had realized that she had broken some kind of regulation.
In the not so short story “the cold equations” the author presents a hard decision to kill one or many the killing of one to save many is decided. Tom godwin wrote a story about an EDS pilot who find a stowaway-- an 18 year old girl named Marilyn. Marilyn snuck on the little ship halling fever medicine for 6 men that were sent to the planet Woden. The pilot gets to know Marilyn who snuck on the ship to go see her brother who was on the other side of Woden. The rule was any sort of stowaway was to be jettisoned immediately “ He would, of course, do it.
In·flu·ence - noun - the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something, or the effect itself. Since the beginning of time people big or small have made an impact on others. In In Cold Blood Herbert Clutter, farmer and owner of River Valley Farm, and his family were very influential on their small, close-knit hometown of Holcomb, Kansas. Although he was not the richest man in Holcomb, he was by far one of the kindest and one of the hardest working.
In “In Cold Blood”, the enjoyment and relaxation reflect the group’s gratification of spending quality time together, fishing, aboard the Estrellita. The group of friends spend a great time together enjoying fishing aboard the fishing boat. They all help fish and do different fishing techniques. The imagery transmits the enjoyable, relaxing vacation, Perry and the others had on the boat. While “The sun was blazing”, Dick, Perry, a young Mexican, and Otto were on “A small boat riding at anchor in a mild sea”.
In the short story “The Cold Equations” by Tom Godwin, he portrays a theme that when life goes against what seems to be imminent death, death will come through and persevere. In the beginning of the story an EDS pilot takes off to send a flu serum to a group of people on the planet called Woden, with just enough fuel to get there by himself. But as he is making his way there he finds out there is a girl that has hidden on his ship, named Marilyn, to get to her brother that is on Woden, but he can’t just kick her out of the ship because it’s a girl. So he calls a cruiser with a commander on it, but he only says that he must kick her out of the ship, and there is nothing they can do to help save her, which makes Marilyn feel very alone. Marilyn
In the book In a ROCKET MADE of Ice the children of Wat Opot community felt like outsiders because they have HIV/AIDS. They were being sold, stranded, unloved by their families, and being raped by people they love. They felt like people would not accept them because of their past. Most of the children were placed in a community shelter called Wat Opot; there they formed a bond with one another. They found family, and lived outside of fear or judgment.
In the short story “The Cold Equations” the author “Tom Godwin” expresses the theme of life and death. In the short story there was a girl named “Marilyn” who snuck into EDS pilots ship, the girl was young in her late teens she only did it because she hadn’t seen her brother in Ten years and didn’t want it wait any longer to see him. When Marilyn suck onto the EDS pilot's ship she expected a punishment but didn’t realize the extent of the punishment, she expected to have to pay her way through and pay a fine, but the real punishment was that she would have to be killed because the ship barely had enough gas to make it to his destination, so the more weight the more gas it used, and with her extra weight the ship would not make it in time to save several other people. After finding out that she would have to die when the ship got to a certain point she began to think she was being selfish not wanting to die, she thought how her family was gonna feel and her friends were gonna feel when she was dead.
The exploration of space, while the seeming pinnacle of human exploration, has been shown to be quite dangerous. From the explosion of the Challenger to the cinematic portrayals of endless possible incidents, there are few things more hazardous than braving the infamous “Final Frontier.” Because of the danger posed by space exploration, there must exist a code to follow to ensure a desired balance between safety and progress. Tom Godwin’s Cold Equations has been described as “the best SF short story ever written, it is a virtuoso performance, a story set in a future so distant and different that we can only glimpse it in mysterious reflections and intriguing images” (qtd. Benford 217).
The story Cold Equations by Tom Godwin, and the poem Traveling Through the Dark by William Stafford, both use two components of moral reasoning; moral judgment, and moral motivation. Cold Equations takes place in outer space where a slight increase in mass not included in the original calculations could get someone killed. Traveling Through the Dark takes place in 1962 on a road probably countryside. An example of moral reasoning is moral judgement, or the ability to correctly reason in regards of certain circumstances. In The Cold Equations Barton the Pilot of the EDS ship finds a stowaway who boarded the ship illegally and says “These ships are given barely enough fuel to reach their destination, and if you stay aboard, your added weight will cause it to use up all its fuel before it reaches the ground.
In Cold Blood Essay #2 Although Perry commited a terrible crime, Capote depicts perry as a innocent and push-over person; therefore, true guilt falls upon the manipulator. Capote writes Dick and Perry as two very seperate people that have underlying differences. Perry tells an anecdote about his initial feelings towarrds Dick explaining why he said the things he said, “‘Deep down,” Perry continued, “way, way rock-bottom, I never thought I could do it. A thing like that.”
In the story, “The Cold Equations”, Tom Godwin depicts the thematic tension as to never go against the path that you’re traveling on, because you could take a wrong turn and end up on a path towards unexpected consequences. In the year 2178, there are cruisers to carry people to the colonies on the far reaches of the galaxy. On the cruiser Stardust, a girl named Marilyn slipped onto an “EDS” or emergency dispatch ship. The EDS’s are only given enough fuel to arrive at their destination and return to the cruiser, with no added weight or any added variables. Marilyn’s added weight had been noticed by the captain of the EDS, and he would have killed her instantly if she were a man, but because she isn’t, he tried to spare her life.
`The story, “The Cold Equation” by Tom Godwin demonstrates the theme, with every action, there is a consequence with an outcome of good or bad. It's not any ordinary day for the six men stationed at Woden, on the Stardust, a spaceship-- a huge problem that is struck throughout the story is, you must kill whoever steps foot into a secret room located in the Stardust. Marilyn, an 18-year-old innocent girl who wanted to see her brother that she missed, was soon discovered in this secret room, therefor she would need to be killed. Although she tried to get her way out of her soon to come death, there was sadly nothing the men could do, but follow the strict law.
The Cold Equations is a short story written by Tom Godwin in August 1954. Within the short story, Godwin is capable of presenting a story that represents a theme of “cold equations”. It puzzles the plot of two characters placed on the space frontier where one has to demise their lives in order to save the other willingly or both die due to the spaceship only acquiring a specific amount of fuel to carry one individual only. The storyline begins as the pilot of the space ship discovers a stowaway. According to the law, the stowaway must be ejected from the shuttle.
Furthermore, the aspect of discovery can also be conveyed in a different ways. The fact that sometimes people, like myself, are being forced to find a new place which can result a negative and positive emotional impact, or future possibilities. In ‘The Little Refugee’, Bruce Whatley illustrates a small shabby boat jam-packed with worried people who are desperate to find new life and hope, whereas Hurley’s his discovery was being forced by his inner-life. Dull and grey-black smoky colours symbolize the overwhelming fear as seen through the body language of the people. And the dominance of the stormy clouds adds to the uncertainty, and the salience draws our eyes to the boat, helping us to easily relate to the terrifying encounters.
Tom Godwin’s short story “The Cold Equations” illustrates how one should think of and become accepting of their consequences whether it's deserved or not. The story is about an Emergency Dispatch Ship, also known as an EDS, with the pilot on a mission to give a group of six men who have a fatal fever. The pilot, Barton, during his mission finds a stowaway named Marilyn found in a small closet on the ship. Marilyn was a young girl trying to go to Mimir, for she had a destination waiting and hoped to see her brother who she hasn't seen in 10 years, but little did she know that there was a previously set protocol that determines the life of a stowaway. Barton had sympathy for the girl and did his best to help her by contacting headquarters and asked if there was any way he could spare Marilyn’s life
