Analysis of Jimmy Carter's Eulogy of Gerald Ford On January 3rd, 2007, President Jimmy Carter read his Eulogy to the funeral party at Gerald Ford's funeral service. Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford were very close friends. Their friendship spawned out of them running against each other in the 1976 presidential election. Ford was the incumbent president at the time and Carter challenged him for his seat in the oval office. Carter would end up winning that seat by 57 more electoral votes than his rival and after his victory, as tradition between the existing president and the president-elect; Ford began debriefing Carter on the current state of the union every week until he would become President. Carter eventually got Israel and Egypt to agree to peace and once he did, on a flight back to Washington D.C. from Camp David, he called Ford with President Anwar Sadat of Egypt and Prime Minister Menachem Begin of Israel to inform the former president about the newly made peace. He discusses their history, their friendship, and their share of faith in clear format with thoughtful transitions. The style of the speech is mournful but has a promising tone to it. Carters rhetoric paints a picture of a dark tunnel with a bright light at the end. He talks in a sad but uplifting tone as a means to lift the audiences spirits. Carter reads the speech off of paper but lifts his head up frequently to check in with the audience. It is evident that the speech is somewhat practiced but still retains a more humble, friendly feel to it. Being a former president, someone who has to deliver speeches a lot, his delivery was what is to be expected, very clear, developed, calculated, and straight forward.
