In the article “The Flight from Conversation,” Sherry Turkle argues that technology has negatively affected people’s communication skills of interacting face-to-face because they prefer to text or email each other. The author has spent over fifteen years studying people and asking them about their lives. She also found that cell phones change what people do and who they are. They change what people do because nowadays everyone prefers to spend hours communicating through the internet and are unable to start meaningful conversations in person with eye-contact. Cell phones also change who people are because human beings tend to express their emotions, thoughts, and beliefs more on the internet rather than talking about them in person to see other people’s reactions. People are accustomed to technology; it is a new way of being “alone together” (Turkle 135). This means that people could be sitting at a table together, but not having a real conversation because they are too focused on their mobile devices. This is a negative aspect because people cannot communicate in person. They are afraid of being alone so they use technology as an excuse to not interact and deal with the nervousness or anxiety of that face-to-face conversation. Through her research she found that people wish that Siri on the iPhone can become more advanced so that people could talk to it when they are feeling lonely. She also found that people find it appealing to talk to artificial assistants like Siri
