Rosemary Okumu PSYC 1113 – Section 11/18 /2016 Gender Gender is the state of being male or female. Male are thought to be adventurous, aggressive, strong whereas females are to be affectionate, attractive, shy and sexy. While I highly identify with my feminine gender characteristics, at times l possess masculine characteristics like confidence, ambition, and sometimes aggression.
The book and class lectures discusses how biological sex, gender, and sexuality can differ from individual to individual. Biological sex is discussed by amount of X & Y chromosomes that a person through genetics. Gender is the acting out or performance of what an individual associates with feminine, masculine, or a mix of the two. It states that gender does not determine sexuality. A man might associate their self with feminine behaviors but might have an attraction to women.
In the “What Gender Got To Do With it” section of They say, I say, both authors Anne-Marie Slaughter and Richard Dorment argue why their gender can 't have it all. But first, what do they meaning by having it all? By my interpretation from their articles, having it all means being successful in your career and still maintaining an active role of parenting. Both authors argue about how their gender is keeping them from achieving that work-life balance goal. However, I believe we can have it all, regardless of our gender.
One of the most famous arguments against the pro-life position is Judith Thomson’s “Violinist Analogy,” in which you, the reader are attached, against your will, to a famous unconscious violinist in order to prevent his dying from a kidney ailment. There have been many articles written about the Violinist Analogy. In her 1971 essay, “A Defense of Abortion” Thomson makes several other arguments against the pro-life position. In this paper, I will look at the entirety of her essay and suggest reasons why it may not stand up to scrutiny today.
Gender roles are present everywhere and are more and more prevalent the further back you go. They define relationships and heavily influence people's actions. Gender roles can hurt those that are trapped in them because they are not allowed the freedom of living like they want. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, one key relationship in the story is wrecked by gender roles.
Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart is a book based up on pre-colonial Nigeria back in the 1890s and it focuses on on traditional society’s and colonialism. The author presents the book Things Fall Apart through the eyes of the main character Okonkwo who was a respected elder in the village. Women in the book were all housewives and they were shown as weak, and as second class citizens of the Umuofian society. The roles of women in the Umuofia society is presented through several events that happened in in the village of Umuofia.

Biologically, sex is determined in terms of chromosomes XX/XY providing directions for an individual to produce certain chemical baths/ bodily developments in the womb as a fetus. The biological trait of sex often defines ones ' gender. Culturally, rules or expectations are created for each specific gender; reflecting how each gender should behave or look. Psychologically, genders have temperaments, social power and social connections that normally reflect either male or female genders.
Another social construct is gender. Sex and gender are the two categories. The sex of a person is, based on biological inheritance. Our chromosomes xx or xy determine if we are a man or woman. As a result, this makes the category real.
Today we often here that gender is a social construct, but I believe that masculinity and femininity are biologically determined. After doing more research on this topic, I have found that it can be a complicated debate, and both sides have strong arguments, but I am here to conclude that males and females act the way they do because they are biologically determined. First off, it is important to know the difference between sex and gender since they are different by definition, but closely related concepts. According to the Pearson Education Psychology textbook, sex is a category based on biological differences in anatomy, hormones, and genetic composition. Gender is a social and psychological phenomenon associated with being “feminine” or “masculine” as these concepts are defined in a given culture (Davis, 401).
What does it mean to be a woman or man? The answer is much more complicated. Gender is not determined by sex organs but includes complex beliefs, behaviors, and characteristics. However, gender roles are solely shaped by society and are expectations for men and women. Such include how a man or woman should dress, behave, and even the jobs they can perform.
Gender is it a concept or is it made apparent by our DNA when you are born or does it change as you grow older? Often gender is something that society defines at birth. According to society certain gender roles are pre established when we are born. The majority of society believes that if you are born to a specific gender you should adhere to the gender roles while other people believe that instead we may be born to a gender but it does not always decide if you are that gender. Science has proven that just because you are born a male or female does not mean that you mentally see yourself as that gender.
