A Cloud of Oppression Experiencing the torment of a label is difficult, especially if it is given to your whole family. In the memoir Red Scarf Girl, set in the time of the Cultural Revolution, being within the upper middle class was frowned upon and proletarians were seen as the leaders of society. The label of black class status tainted the bourgeoisie, including the Jiang family, with torture, ridicule, and incrimination by others influenced by the governmentally coercive ways of Communism. Political oppression was visible everywhere within China, affecting neighborhoods, families and even children.

The Holocaust was a big tragedy that started on January 30, 1933, and ended in 1945.These twelve years affect a lot of people around the world differently mentally, physically and emotionally. There are some people who actually went through this horrible time period and was able to tell their story and some people who left her diary behind for others to tell their story. One book I read that stood out from other books During the Holocaust was The Girl in the Green Sweater: A Life in Holocaust 's Shadow by Krystyna Chiger. The story was told by Chiger herself.

November 25th marks the International Day Against Violence Towards Women as well as the deaths of the three Mirabal sisters. The novel In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez describes their journey to serve as “models for women fighting against injustice of all kinds” (Alvarez 324). As a girl today, I am well aware of the adversities for women in the world. Inequalities in our society are undeniable, but we focus on our own lives rather than women’s lives in the horrific world of human trafficking. The novel Sold by Patricia McCormick explores this terrible world and its implications. McCormick has experience with this world through extensive research and time spent among third world country red light districts. Reading this text, I began to think about gender and its large role on society.

The author, Susan Glaspell, showed many ways in the story “Trifles” how males can look at things in a different perspective than women sometimes do. For generations, women have fought for power and rights, one of the biggest events in history is The Women’s Rights’ Movement starting in 1848 and going on for years until 1920 when the 19th amendment that granted American women the right to vote. Throughout history the fight between women and men has been a long process from rights, to gender specific roles in career, pay, and equality.

Steig Larsson, born in 1954, was a journalist. He was the editor – in – chief of the magazine Expo from 1999 and previously worked at a major news agency for many years. Larsson wrote the trilogy not with the intention of publishing because he thought of it more as a hobby.
The story chosen as the best short-short story is ‘A Rose for Emily’ by William Faulkner. The initial reaction to the short story was horror, as Faulkner utilizes two literary techniques. The techniques are used throughout the entire story to cause intrigue in readers, create suspense, and shift one’s view. Throughout ‘A Rose for Emily’, Faulkner uses a confusing level of chronology to describe events and has several narrators presenting the story (Vartany, 2011). Each point of view was essential to the describing the strength of Emily and her level of pride.

Feminist criticism is a type of literary criticism that was well known in the 1970’s. Women would begin taking apart the classics and analyzing how the author portrayed women. The women in Crime and Punishment , especially Sonya and Dunya have a stronger state of mind and are able to handle the pressures and struggles of life better than the men in the novel.
The role of women in literature crosses many broad spectrums in works of the past and present. Women are often portrayed as weak and feeble individuals that submit to the situations around them, but in many cases women are shown to be strong, independent individuals. This is a common theme that has appeared many times in literature. Across all literature, there is a common element that causes the suffering and pain of women. This catalyst, the thing that initiates the suffering of women, is essentially always in the form of a man.
