The Glass Castle tells the story of Jeannette Walls and her family. The family was constantly short on money and food, subsequently causing them to move around a lot to try and resettle. Although the family is dysfunctional, neither of the parents are condemned throughout the memoir. Through the first half of the work, the Walls family lives on the West Coast in various mining towns. Frequent moves from town to town are characterized at this point in the memoir.
