F. Scotts Fitzgerald wrote e classic called “The Great Gatsby” that took place in the
1920’s around New York city, which is referred to in the book as the West and East Egg. The book begins with Nick Carraway, the narrator, describing a life lesson his father once taught him which was not to judge others and to remember that not everyone has had the same opportunities as him. He then ironically continues the story describing the story the infamous mystery man named the Gatsby who had a mindset of dwelling in the past and reputation of throwing extravagant parties. Gatsby has his heart set on a “perfect girl” he once knew in the past named Daisy Buchanan who is now married to Tom Buchanan, a man who she didn't want to marry. …show more content…

The mysterious man with a huge mansion in the West Egg, who threw overly extravagant parties in hopes to one day achieve his dream of being with his the perfect girl of his past Daisy. He wasn't always this glamorous person, before becoming “the man to who give his name to this book” (6), he was known as James Gatz a young man who didn't grow up with money. He only gained this dirty money to please Daisy because she couldn’t be with a man who couldn't provide all her heart’s desires. Once he was able to be with her, he really couldn’t feel satisfied because he was never able to stop unrealistically dreaming. Daisy Buchanan was the women of Gatsby’s american dream, who couldn’t possibly uphold those incredible standards. For the reasons that she was married to and having the daughter of Tom Buchanan. But she was the “golden girl” Gatsby had to have, so she did try her best to live up to the women she used to be because she is in an disconsolate marriage. Their story is narrated by Nick Carraway who at the beginning of the book not to criticize anyone by his father, but Nick does suggest that “reserving judgements is a matter of infinite hope”(6) in order to express the challenge is to keep your comments in. This took place in the 1920’s where women weren’t meant to be taken seriously, they were only meant to be a good housewife. So she hoped for her daughter to be happy by being oblivious to the horrid things in the world. The second theme is the American Dream, which is symbolized in the book by a single green light that Gatsby reaches toward in the darkness (26). Gatsby tries to achieve his dream throughout the entire book by working with Wolfsheim in order to rise to the top for Daisy. But throughout the book his money is “new money” so he is not apart of the elite upper class. If you are not apart of the elite you are not satisfied and will be judged instantly. So the ending of the book, Gatsby realizes the American Dream is intangible because through hard work of making your own money, you still will never be satisfied. Another theme is the importance of one’s past, which is the main reason the main character, Jay Gatsby, will never attain his dream of being with Daisy. “No amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man will store in his ghostly heart” (101). Gatsby has created a perfect image of what he used to know of the golden girl. This was an image of daisy before his time in the war and the longer they have been apart the more “ghostly” his standards are.
