Aryn Mosley Parsons United History 202 April 1, 2017 Critical Analysis The Guns of August by Barbara W. Tuchman is an amazing book that I am glad i chose to pick up for the assignment. The book is based around the events leading up to and during World War 1. The book was published in 1962 and was also named August 1914 for the fact that it was based around that month of the Great War, Tuchman wrote The Guns of August as a set of books that tells the story of The Great war. She goes into a very detailed description on the funeral that takes place right before the war, With the funeral being so detail she talks in an astonishing amount of detail of what everyone was wearing and possible thoughts of people present. The funeral takes place four years before war broke out in Europe and it had many of the leaders of the countries in Europe present. With discussion of the funeral we get the story of some of the countries and what policies and politics are going on in that time. Tuchman starts the next pages in the book talking about the plans and outbreak of war. With the start of the war being the assassination of the Archduke we get the story of what and why the countries raised arms against one another. The biggest and most in depth look into the battle of the Great war is set in the many pages Tuchman uses to describe the battles. Tuchman a woman of great knowledge and way with words and descriptions of historical events that no one had had before. Born in New York in the year 1912 she was the daughter of a wealthy banking family and attended Walden School in New York City. She became a research assistant with the Institute of Pacific Relations and worked as a writer for the magazine Nation. After being married she soon left her work and put her life and passion into being a devoted housewife and mother. Her writing and work did not continue again till her kids were all grown. When she started writing again she quickly gained a spotlight for a vivid depictions of historical events, With her greatest publication being The Guns Of August she saw recognitions from many high level politicians and saw her book awarded for it amazing details and research. Barbara Tuchman was an amazing women and one of the greatest authors I have ever had the opportunity to learn about. She passed away in Greenwich, Connecticut in the year 1989 and is revered as one of the greatest Historians of the second half of the twentieth
