Amanda Gorman is a 26-year-old American poet and activist. Gorman grew up with a speech impediment, influencing her to write poetry as a way to express herself. Rather than seeing her impediment as something slowing her down, she learned to view it as a superpower. Her inauguration poem “The Hill We Climb” speaks on the Black Lives Matter movement, the losses of the COVID-19 pandemic, and equality in the US. She delivers the idea that a country shouldn’t strive for perfection, but rather seek improvement. The speaker feels as if they will never again experience the happiness and warmth of being with other people. Gorman first displays the downsides and isolation caused by the pandemic, and what happens when people can no longer connect with others. Later on, Gorman states that even though “[people] have never met” they still are both human and can heal through connection, as they “have sensed the other all along” (“Lighthouse” lines 32-33). She first introduces the idea of hope and connection with others in this line, saying that one must first reach out to truly feel hope and that healing comes from uniting with others. Gorman finishes by saying that “No human is a stranger,” and that people must unite to overcome hardships (“Lighthouse” line 36). Gorman shows that connection with others can give people hope through hard times and encourages her readers to never give up. The subject of this poem is healing through hardship. Gorman uses metaphors that start negative to symbolize the depression and isolation caused by a pandemic.
