Analysis of Document II The end of the 19th century marked an era filled with political and economic chaos in Americas history. This letter was written during the meeting of black citizens in New Orleans in 1888. Written as a result of the “reign of terror” against black citizens during the Gilded Age and the massacre of Thibodaux. This letter is a primary source, since it was written during the New Orleans Mass Meeting at Geddes Hall in August 1888.
1. What factors differentiate the history and experience of African Americans from those of Asian, Hispanic, and Native Americans? The factors that would separate African Americans from racial ethnic groups would be their involuntary immigration and initial enslavement. Other groups came in hopes of political freedom and economic opportunity. While African Americans history and experience were based upon economic exploitation, the denial of freedom, denied their language, history, culture, ancestral ties and homeland affiliation.

Their names should be recognized and remembered by all black citizens.
George Washington Carver was born into a world where African Americas were not treated equal. He was born during the Lincoln administration, where President Lincoln was working to have a united United States of America. The Southern part of the United States were supportive of having black slaves to work on their farms and plantations. The Northern part of the United States, however, did not support the use of slaves to perform work. This caused a huge conflict within the country and started the Civil War.
During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the United States underwent significant changes in terms of educational opportunities for marginalized groups. This period saw a major shift in societal norms and beliefs, as girls and women, African-Americans, and American Indians were granted access to education that was previously unavailable to them. In this paper, we will focus on the educational opportunities provided to girls and women, as well as African-Americans, and discuss how these opportunities were consistent with progressive educational ideals. In the early 19th century, girls and women had limited access to education due to societal norms and beliefs that reinforced the idea that women were intellectually inferior to men.
Black history in the Olympics has come to be a very important topic that has not been dealt with in many history classes. The purpose of highlighting the importance of black history throughout the Olympics is to provide a better understanding towards how the American society was improving and transitioning before the end of segregation which happened after 1962. Example athletes such as John Carlos and Jesse Owens stand out and show the world how proud they are to be a part such an outstanding event by the side other hard working competitors.
Years later, President Ford extended the week into an entire month. It began as an infrastructure to help eradicate the neglection of African American history; nonetheless, over the years, there has been much debate concerning the annual celebration. Although Black History Month has received backlash from both African Americans and Caucasians, it is still a necessity in today’s life because it provides historical information that the youth cannot find in textbooks and recognizes neglected people who have fulfilled great actions. Historically, African American history has been deemed as an unimportant subject.
This year’s observance of Black History Month has caused controversy for excluding non African-American blacks. With this year’s increased racial progress, it is time for all blacks to be included in this celebration. According to the U.S. Census Bureau's most recent statistics, there are around 4 million Caribbean-Americans and an estimated 1.9 million African immigrants in the US. Very little of their history is mentioned and president Obama even deemed the celebration “African-American Month.”
The end of the Civil War was one of the greatest turning points in the United States history that changed the way the nation ran politically, socially and economically. The Union defeating the Southern Confederacy put forth an interracial democracy, united all states into a single nation and most importantly - abolished slavery. This gave birth to Reconstruction, a period that followed the Civil War focusing on the integration of African Americans into a society that was previously dominated by white people. Reconstructionopened a pathway to educational and economical opportunities, citizenship and freedom, and the establishment of beneficial laws and amendments for equal rights. Post Civil War, African Americans started to gain rights to gain rights, and soon gain rights equal to whites. While there were some people/things standing in their way (KKK, Black Codes), in the end they got what they needed; Equality. Many acts and laws were passed to aid the new rights now held by African Americans, as well as the numerous people willing to help. New Amendments were added to give African Americans rights after the war, all giving them some equal rights to whites. The first of the three added was the Thirteenth Amendment, it gave African Americans freedom from slave owners, and stated that no one could be kept as a slave in the U.S..
Racism can be followed throughout history to the colonization of America to the Age of Imperialism in Britain. To this day the way that African Americans have been depicted has determined how they are treated. To fully understand the effects of propaganda, it is necessary to be able to answer the question, To what extent has the marginalization of African Americans contributed to social and political movements in the Civil Rights Era? This is significant because the racial tension in the United States has strengthened with the birth of the Black Lives Matter movement.
The people from Africa were generally part of early American history; however, Africans had experience slavery under better conditions compared to the conditions imposed by other civilized society. From the Egyptian Empire to the Empire of Songhai, slavery was practice for the betterment of their society, however, foreigners invaded these regions and took their slave, their ports and impose these people to a life of servitude in the Caribbean islands and in the English’s colonies. Furthermore, the African American slaves were an active agent of society in the earliest period of American history; they have brought new religious practices to their community; for instance, they constructed networks of communities; they had fought in war alongside
African American Studies was a great experience. Has opened my eyes to my surrounding and the world around me. This course with Dr. Sheba Lo, was something out of me confront zone. I learned so many things from race to cultural to the importance aspect of African American. We are isolated to an environment that hide so much history that we all don’t think they are important to who we have become.
African American literature has a way of improving one’s way of thinking. History itself has a way of influencing the future in a good or bad way. Some will take stories of history to corrupt the world, while others try to uplift, encourage, and improve the people of the future. For instance, Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois were striving to improve the world in their own way. In Washington’s introduction it states, “the best way to ensure progress and peace in the South was for Euro-Americans to respect African Americans’ desire for improved economic opportunities…”
