In this essay that Ken Saxon writes, he talks about the liberal arts approach to college. He goes back and gives examples from his own life and how his college and after college careers played out. He is attempting to reach out to college students and high school students who are about to go to college. His purpose is to get more students to take a liberal arts approach to college. I plan to break down Saxon’s essay and see if he has anything that is helpful for me, as I get ready for college in the next year. Liberal arts may be a great approach to college, but it may not be the best approach to take.

He had good evidence and creditable sources. He has almost no pathos, except for when he talks about some of his experiences. His logos are not bad at all, but I feel like that is one area he could definitely improve on. Also, he has some great sufficiency of evidence, but his typicality is awful. He used himself and Steve Jobs as references and these are not typical at all. For the most part he did a great job logically when writing this essay. Now looking at his essay itself, I didn’t like where he first starts off on how he became something great with a major is history. To me this doesn’t seem to happen very often today, and it’s not very typical. Saxon also fails to really give the other side of this any kind of chance. He doesn’t mention other approaches to college in essay and that isn’t very professional. If he had mentioned the other side, he would have a much better essay. I say this because; most people want to hear the pros and cons, not just the pros. On that note, he still makes great points whether or not he mentions the cons as
