The novel “The Light in Hidden Places” by Sharon Cameron is a true story of courage, sacrifice, and resilience during the darkest times of human history, the Holocaust. Set in Poland during World War 2, the story follows the journey of Stefania Pogórska, a young Catholic woman who risked her own life to save 13 Jewish people, 6 of them being children. She was able to do this by hiding them in her employer’s attic. Throughout the story, we as readers experience a roller coaster of emotions. Experience real kindness and compassion in the face of overwhelming adversity. Helena is Fusia’s sister, who provides a different perspective on the story. She is originally portrayed as selfish, and greedy, but, throughout the story, she undergoes significant character development by seeing that her older sister was risking her own life to save others. Which transformed her from a self-centered individual to a compassionate and courageous ally in Fusia’s mission. Getting to know Helena will offer insight into the complexities of human nature and the potential for positive change even in the most challenging circumstances. While Fusia, Izio, and Helena are characters that readers would likely want to get to know for their strengths and complexities, there are also reasons why some may hesitate.
