I just want Chocolates Imagine going to your local grocery store and the only food available was food produced from your local area. For example, the fresh fruits and vegetables from around the world like bananas, coconuts, and peppers were not an option at your grocery store. That would suck right? This kind of Dilemma is possible. There is a growing trend in British Colombia in favor of eating locally produced food. They are called the “Locavores” they claim that 100-mile food is the way to a more sustainable agriculture and consumption. As stated by Pelletier, “The Asian population certainly would have a hard time, eliminating rice from their diet”. With no rice fields in British Columbia means rice would be cut out of their diets this will give not only Asians but also the general population a hard time adjusting to a different diet because rice is a common grain consumed. Although, rice fields are not produced all over, it is still consumed and imported to most countries around the world. The local Locavore’s in British Colombia must also realize that an excessive amount of food is not produced in their local area. “British Colombia produces only 48% of all foods its inhabitants consume”. In other words, going exclusively local would have an effect not only of the people but also the animals consumed. For the reason, most animal food has ingredients that are not grown in their region, resulting to a shortage in animal protein leading to famine. Although eating locally may be beneficial because much unhealthy food would be cut down from diets; many consumers would still suffer due to the lack of ingredients. Living in an environment where wheat is produced highly and not providing substitutes will result in limiting my options. Drawbacks like these can be avoided by importing goods from all over the world to satisfy not just my needs, but also others who are in the same predicament as myself. There is an abundance of people who suffer to more allergies then myself. Living in a very dry area would make it extremely difficult to produce foods that will fit my diet. Therefore, the chances of me becoming a Locavore are very slim due to my diet needs. Another dilemma is I would have to settle for in-season produce because I do not get the four- seasons in my area. I am a huge lover for Spanish and white rice and unfortunately that is not produced at a 100-mile radius where I live. These are just problems I will face in my area. There are areas that will have it much worse when it comes to producing goods, meaning they will face the same problem if not more.
