The short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell enhances the theme of rivalry in use of the setting. The setting is key to making this story because it intensifies the situation. The protagonist, Rainsford, is trapped on an island by a mad man called Zaroff. Zaroff uses the island to lure in boats and capture the crews. He then hunts the men as if it were a game. The island traps the men and cuts them off from signaling for help. Simply by being on the island, Rainsford is at the mercy of Zaroff, his hunter and rival. “The Interlopers” by Saki uses a different literary element to enhance this theme.
