Introduction and Setting The book The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart is a fiction book written in third person omniscient. The time period the book takes place in is not stated. The location most of the story takes place in is the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened. “And there on the island’s near side was the Institute: an arrangement of massive grey buildings, a broad plaza, and a slender tower that resembled a lighthouse, all of which appeared to be built entirely of island stone… Behind it and on either side rose up steep hills, and beyond the hills could be seen the peaks of still more hills, and beyond those still more. This setting plays a major role in the story. Mr. Benedict tells the orphans of “the Emergency,” which is the phenomenon of children’s voices saying messages that were being sent to everyone in the world’s heads by “the sender”. Mr. Benedict sent Reynie, Sticky, Constance, and Kate after they had agreed to stay together on a mission to the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened to stop the sender of the messages. If the setting were different, the purpose of the story would change. The Mysterious Benedict Society wouldn’t even had been brought together at all, had it not been for this mission at the Institute that brought them together after taking multiple tests.
