This course introduced me to a variety of concepts that have allowed me to realize how much discrimination, racism, sexism and injustice exist in this world. Two specific units that I believe have helped me the most are “identity and diversity” and “disability issues”. In “identity and diversity” we read about the Watts Rebellion, “Black Men in Public Space”, “Myth of a Latin Women” and much more. In “disability issues” we read “Why Are Huge Number of Disabled Students Dropping Out of College?” The reason why I chose these four articles is because I feel that these are the best four that represent the discrimination, racism, sexism and injustice that exists. An example of how sexism is represented is when she was told by a guy “I thought you Latin girls were supposed to mature early” like if we were some type of fruit or vegetable. The fact that certain things are expected from all Hispanics girls such as being “spicy” or “hot” like if we were a type of food makes me angry. The author of this article, S.E. Smith presented many people such as Andrea Chandler, Laura, Candice Casas and Katie along with their experiences. These four girls have one thing in common, and that thing has allowed them to experience many positive but mainly negative experiences that deal with discrimination and injustice. For example, Andrea Chandler she is a disabled Navy Veteran who always had a hard time completing requirements for a four-year college, just like the majority of the disabled students in her school, every time she asked for accommodations she had to go through such a long process filling out paper work, this was nonstop until one day she threaten to call the DOE Civil Rights Department. After that, miraculously they gave her most of the accommodations such as a service dog. Although she got her majority of accommodations she still considered her school a “living nightmare” because the arrangements of classrooms and building made it extremely difficult for her to get through with a wheelchair. Chandlers case perfectly describes discrimination and injustice. Here is why, the people that had her constantly filling out paper work were practically discrimination her because they made her go through such a long, unnecessary process to simply give her a service dog. They were also being very injust with her because the school
