After reading The Neoliberal Arts by William Deresiewicz you probably start to think about your education. In this reading William Deresiewicz starts out by talking about his experience being a writing teacher at an elite liberal arts college. In his article his main argument would have to be that he thinks that education today is in the age of neoliberalism. WillIam Deresiewicz throughout his article gives and explains how schools are providing their students with a real education. His article does give students a lot to think about but I would not say I agree with everything he has explained.

With that he talks about banner displays from two different schools and compares the meaning of the two different displays. And one of the banner displays has a very meaningful message for their students. The other banner display has a vague message for students to take away what they think it and what they want to take away from it. William deresiewicz main message in his article is that today our education system is in the neoliberal age. Meaning today schools are about preparing students for the workforce rather than actually teaching students things we need in life. “In a neoliberal age the main purpose of education is simply to produce producers and not so much about providing students with real education.” (deresiewicz p.2) With that said schools are not teaching to actually learn anything but just to get a job. William also brings up that learning is at risk for students. College has three separate purposes, the commercial which prepares you to start a career, the moral which helps you determine your own beliefs and the cognitive which helps you learn how to think better. He also has many different sources and evidence to support his article but he never cites anyone. William deresiewicz quotes many people and never gives the readers any background information about them. In a way it make it seem like all the direct quotes in his article were made up. He really is not able to back up his sources which makes his argument weak. William deresiewicz just shows one side in his article the whole article is just about his thoughts and experience. And it should be but he should have gave some insight about the other side of the argument. Being able to show both sides of an argument makes for a stronger paper. Also gives readers a chance to decide how they feel and what is their position on the topic. With only giving his own side of the argument he also quotes his book a couple times.
