Jonathan Kozol’s book explores the impoverished community of Mott Haven. The children interviewed in the community have had little exposure to the world outside of the South Bronx. Without anything to compare their situation to, they tend to accept and attempt to live out their childhood, playing and making new friends in the direst of circumstances. The children interviewed often discussed their religious views and their relationship with God. Children in privileged communities tend to look to their parents to help them when they are in trouble or feel confident their parents will be able to fix any situation.

Even Miss Luddy had some hesitation knowing her students would sound different to the suburban students and vice versa (259). In addition to this, the suburban students already had a negative mind set towards the city, as seen during a class activity. When the teacher asked the students to describe the city, they replied with negative adjectives, such as terrible, scary, and dangerous (279). These examples show how segregation has created a barrier between the urban and suburban students. The students know they are different from each other and talk about it
Wes’s new resident lied in the streets of Dundee Village, where all sorts of people lived with different incomes, races, and ethnicities. Wes was “walking around Dundee Village hoping these bucolically named ‘avenues’ and ‘circles’ would lead him to a better place than the city streets had” (Moore 57) while also in hope of a better future. This quote is particularly significant because of its hidden metaphoric meaning. Bucolic, an adjective defined as of or relating to shepherds; pastoral, Wes was awaiting a new fate that led him, much like a shepherd, to a future exceeding his brother’s. Dundee Village was an escape for the Moore family, but it was also a flight for many other families and independents from the streets of Baltimore.
Rainsford is a clever guy. Especially when he is in trouble… In “ The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford is hopeful, clever, and brave. Rainsford is hopeful because he keeps trying to beat General Zaroff. In the story “ The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard connell, it says “‘He shinned excitedly up a tree and looked back.’
The main character is completely changed by the places he visits. His time in his small-town home shapes his adult life very obviously. The residents are stereotypical small-town inhabitants, out of place if the story was set in the city or suburbs. More importantly, however, is the time. The author acknowledges this several times throughout the novel, writing passages like "…but this was far less common in those days than it is now.

Or do they seek the comfort and security that comes from a normal life? From the child’s point of view, the world will always be in their favor, no matter what path they choose.
When you meet someone new you start talking, and you might find something in common with them. When you find things that you have in common with someone you’re starting some type of connection based just off similarities between you, and someone else. It’s easy to be yourself where you are comfortable, and with people you are comfortable with. I agree with David Brooks that we group ourselves with people we are comfortable with because it helps us feel a sense of stability.

In James Baldwin’s essay, Stranger in the Village, he depicts a distant village that has become isolated from outsiders, however, strangers are welcome into the village. Having little distractions, Baldwin finds an ease at mind for focusing on his writing. However, being isolated does have fallbacks. For instance, upon visiting the village, the residents were so unfamiliar with African Americans, which caused many people to stop and view him. Some would put their “hand on my hand, astonished that the color did not rub off” (65).
This tells us that the people are probably old or inactive. Would you think you could live happily in such a boring town? Sammy’s community really motivated him to get out of the town and explore the new world beyond his daily life. All this nuisance happening in sammy’s town proves that he wanted to find freedom. Every time new customers from out of town come into his store, sammy really admired them and wishes he sees them everyday but there’s only old people in his town.
The child who is growing up in the suburbs may feel the need to impress their family that lives in the urban area. They want to be able to fit in with them, by dressing and acting like
Bumping into people while looking down and asking multiple people for direction even though I was shy. Giving five minutes after each class to get to the other, walking into a classroom on my first day people staring and observing. Moving to a different town is not about the new house, it is about adapting to a new environment. Moving away from family and friends can be a tough thing to do. I had to adjust to leaving my friends and family that I loved and seen almost every day.
