Worldwide, millions of people are consuming fast food, unaware of the mental and physical consequences it can cause to their body. The fast food industry lacks to label the food they advertise, leaving individual’s clueless and with little, to no choice. In the article An Equal Shot: Big Fat America the author claims that “The real solution here is to give people the choice to eat organic foods that are in season and are locally produced. But that can only work if people are informed, and that means more labeling.” On the other hand, if the fast food industry informed people about the ingredients they are putting into their bodies and labeled more of their food items, it would be no one, but the individual to blame.
The amount of unhealthy food consumed in America goes well beyond McDonalds. In fact, you have to go no farther than your local grocery store to find equally as terrible food choices. For example, in recent years the government has put out warnings against eating fat in excess, which lead many big food companies, from yogurt to Wheat Thins, to send out new products with “less fat”. However, products with “less fat” actually have nearly twice as much sugar. Many studies have shown that sugar in excess is much worse than fat.
In 1990, author Wendell Berry had a collection of essays released together in a book titled What Are People For?. Among these essays is one titled The Pleasures of Eating, focusing on the responsibilities of eating which includes self-awareness regarding what one’s consuming. Berry begins his essay voicing his solution on how city people can bring new life to American farming and rural life. Berry’s solution is simply to “Eat responsibly” (1). He elaborates on this stating that “Most eaters … think of food as an agricultural product, perhaps, but they do not think of themselves as participants in agriculture” (Berry 1).
Food companies jump through meticulous hoops just for the reason of withholding nutritional information from their customers. “These companies fight, tooth and nail, against labeling. The fast food industry fought against giving you the calorie information. They fought against telling you if there is trans-fat in your food. The meat packing industry for years prevented country-of-origin labeling.
In Michael Pollan’s In Defense of food: An Eater’s Manifesto, the author starts by advising the reader plain and simply that we should “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” Pollan Explains that the art of eating that is natural to us has become overcomplicated in recent years.

In “The Pleasures of Eating” by Wendell Berry’s main claim is that us people should be more connected to our food. Wendell uses pathos to make the readers feel guilty, and uneducated on what they are putting into their bodies. Wendell thinks that we do not understand the full concept of food for example he says, “for them, then, food is pretty much an abstract idea” (Wendell 231). Wendell thinks that us people just view ourselves as consumers and do not care about what has been done to our food or what is actually in it. The author uses a guilty tone to make the reader feel guilty and want to change.
America is one of the most obese countries in the world, known for apple pie and an excessive amount of McDonald’s. As a culture, there is a lack of self control when it comes to the foods we consume. People often over consume and over indulge, which has wreaked havoc on the health and well being of those who give in to these temptations. The issue is that large corporations and even our own government play a role in helping feed the problem; they care more about profitability and benefiting the business than the health of the consumer. The health of Americans is declining and more chronic diseases and health problems are appearing as a result of unhealthy diets, but there are many different methods that can help fix this issue.
Are we truly cruel people if we eat meats, that came from factories? Would people stop eating their food, if they knew how they were made? The author Wendell Berry from “The Pleasures of Eating” argued that the factories where we get our food, don't treat the animal properly and are really cruel to them. He also argued that he will not eat any kind of meat that he knows for a fact that had a miserable life. Finally, Berry uses a lot of emotion in his article to get his point across , he doesn't use any kind of fact to back it up. Everything that he discuss in base on his opinion alone.
Food is our source of energy that gets us through the day, we resort to fast food during our busy day only because it fits our lifestyle, fast and cheap, however it's really unhealthy and contain an extreme amount of calories. According to the article, "Still A Fast Food Nation" by Eric Schlosser, he claims because of fast food, the majority of the population in America is overweight or obese. (Schlosser 1) As described in the article, “Yes, Healthful Fast Food is possible. But Edible?,” by Mark Bittman, with the creation of a food movement, it created the possibility for a healthy lifestyle for most of them. The new food movement shaped and created restaurants that discards highly processed and genetically manipulated food and replaces it
America is among the most obese countries in the world only surpassed by countries with a small population. This is probably a surprise to no one. However with so much exposure to obesity in America, why hasn’t a drastic change occurred and why do the obesity rates do nothing but increase every year? The reason behind our increased obesity is not because we’re a nation incapable of making our own healthy food choices, it is because we are impetuously handing our money to food corporations who put fattening and not necessarily healthy ingredients in our food without our knowledge. The food industry keeps secrets from us in many ways, including the spread of genetically modified organisms and why Monsanto is trying to hide this, why there is
Americans today are well-known for their eating habits. With all the options the food industry gives us it makes it hard to go to the grocery store and resist picking up that bag of barbeque-flavored chips or blueberry flavored candy. Due to these processed foods obesity is a growing epidemic in our country and who is to blame for it? In an article entitled “What You Eat is Your Business” by Radley Balko, Balko argues for less government intervention. Balko believes is it our responsibility to take care of ourselves and make it a priority.
Action must be taken by the food industry in order to start eliminating the problems that are causing the society to deteriorate. There are countless health issues within America that continue to grow due to the fact that the food industry is not regulating the food being provided and sole enough. Obesity and being overweight are one of the many social issues that can be linked back to the food industry. While it is true that there are cases of obesity and being overweight due to lack of exercise or genetics, it is primarily the food that cause people to gain excess weight. So many foods nowadays contain surplus amounts of calories, fats, and sugar which have a direct correlation to weight gain.
Fast Food: Who 's to Blame? Why is it that America is the fattest country in the world? Who’s to blame? The parents or the fast food industries?
Don’t even get me started on the American food industry! The american food industry is one of the only food industries in the whole wide world that favors money over the health of its citizens. The food that most Americans eat is processed crap, if you can even call it food! How many of you have eaten popcorn, chips, candy, or crackers in the last week? The amount of chemicals in the food we eat as a country on a daily basis is freaking ridiculous.
