In the story of Tom Brennan by J.C. Burke, the protagonist Tom experiences a traumatic catastrophe of his brother’s drink driving incident leaving his brother Daniel in jail, two dead and one paralysed which left Tom’s beliefs of his family shattered. Tom’s response to such a chaotic event in their social position is one of self-hatred, this is portrayed through the extended metaphor of darkness, “In the dark I could see the grime… I could feel it pasted crawling on my skin,” emphasising the despair and melancholy which fills Tom’s heart, and the sense of paralysis. There is always those “ok” books and those “good” books, and even those “great” books but The Running Dream is a book so special you will never forget it.. From the first day I opened the first page of the book, I was intrigued and curious. Me and Jessica shared many common characteristics which lead to a special connection between me and Jessica. Having this I continued to read the book to see what made her special. Jessica was just like me, athletic, happy, living the life that every kid our age would.
The story, The Running Dream by Wendlin Van Draanen, increases the empathy of readers in two ways, 1- It helps readers empathize with people who lost something important to them. 2- It helps readers empathize with people born with a limiting disability and people who aren't seen for who they are. First, The Running Dream increases empathy for people who lost something and had to live without it, but from that point onwards they can't go back. The character being empathized with is Jessica, who lost her leg in a bus accident and is struggling to keep hope of getting better and running.
When people hear World War II they immediately think of D-day, Germany, Pearl Harbor, etc. Think of the postwar era of World War II. It was a prosperous time for the economy and the military. There were some prejudices that arose from the Japanese-American internment. Also political standoffs that were to tense you could cut it with a dull knife.
Over the last couple of days in class we have discussed F. Scott Fitzgerald’s short story “Winter Dreams”. This short story explores several themes such as reality vs idealism and over expectations.
