The Different Sides of Brother
Most siblings growing up don’t get along. They get into lots of fights and plain just don’t like each other. Sometimes they say things they don’t mean including; go away, you’re so stupid, I hate you, and even sometimes I’m going to kill you. In the story The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, there is a character named Brother. He has always wanted a sibling, but not just any sibling the “perfect” sibling. But in real life there is no such thing as a perfect anything. Now when Brother finally got a brother, he was so happy, until he realized his brother was not all there. Brother decided that if his brother Doodle could never be all there, then he will kill him. Could you ever go through with that? Throughout the story readers get to see how when a loved one has a disability it’s hard to accept it. In this story it shows the different ways that Brother acts dealing with Doodle including; Brother becomes egotistic, a little antagonistic, but also can be very considerate.

It was very hard on the family because everyone thought he was going to die, but then he didn’t die. Brother wanted to make sure Doodle was all there otherwise he did not want him as a brother. The brother did not accept Doodle as a brother and did not love and care for him. Brother said if he was not all their he did not want him as a brother, “It was bad enough having an invalid brother, but having one who possibly was not all there was unbearable, so I began to make plans to kill him by smothering him with a pillow” (Hurst 464). While most people would accept and love their siblings just for who they’re are Doodle’s brother did not, because he didn’t want to be made fun of, if people knew he had a brother that was not all there.
