The Scarlet Ibis This story is called “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst. This story is about a child named Doodle who has disabilities. It is also about brotherhood, pride, and how they learn to treat others. This is a story where the narrator and Doodle about the life he and Doodle had. Throughout the story, the narrator feels too prideful and too ashamed to realize how cruel he treated Doodle. In the beginning of the story,the narrator gets overwhelmed by pride and how ashamed he feels of Doodle being crippled. For example, when everybody sees Doodle walking, the narrator sees how “that pride” made him a slave for teaching Doodle how to walk. This reveals that he is a slave of pride and will do anything to not feel shame for having a crippled brother. Not only this but he was teaching Doodle how to walk for his benefit instead of Doodles. In addition, when Doodle turns six, and the narrator have a plan to teach Doodle how to swim, run, and etc. to achieve before Doodle enters school, but when they fail the narrator’s “pride had cracked”. For example, when he left Doodle to fend for himself the narrator felt a “streak of cruelty” within himself. This reveals that the narrator was disappointed of failing. The narrator leaves Doodle in the storm as a way to encourage him to run faster. In addition, when the narrator returns and finds Doodle dead he calls him his “fallen scarlet ibis”. This shows that he regrets to leave Doodle alone to fend for himself. This also reveals that he realizes how cruel he was to Doodle and Doodle and the narrator had to suffer the consequences.
