Marta Salinas, realistic fiction story, “The Scholarship Jacket,” takes place in a school, in Texas. At the school, they give out a scholarship jacket to the person who had maintained the highest grades for eight years. Martha, the main character has a sister who received the jacket, and she is expected to receive it also. She talks to the principal and finds out the jacket price is now fifteen dollars and the causes conflict with Martha and her receiving the jacket. Marta Salinas builds a theme that when following your morals, it can lead to be a positive influence on others and she portrays this by using setting and dialogue.

The dialogue that is used in the story helps emphasize the story’s theme. “‘It means you’ve earned it by having the highest grades for eight years and that's why they're giving it to you” Too late I realized the significance of my words. Grandpa knew that I understood it was not a matter of money”’(110) This is significant because it shows how Grandpa knew the right decision was not to pay because it took away the significance of the jacket. While Martha was talking to her grandfather and realized the significance of her words, she learned about morals and how this helps dramatize the theme. The dialogue in the entire story is used to show the importance of the theme and make it clear. The setting in the story helps show how difficult it is for Martha to receive the jacket and how she is treated. “‘The main character of “The scholarship jacket” is a Mexican-American girl who lives in Texas. In 1731,Tejanos,or Texas Mexicans,established a ranch community in what was Northeastern Mexico. More than 100 years later they joined forces with immigrants from the United States to gain their independence from Mexico. ”’This shows that in the past there was a lot of prejudice with ethnicity. Because of this Mr.Boone thought that Martha should not receive the jacket. Mr.Schmidt believes that ethnicity did not matter about choosing who should receive the jacket only grades did. The setting is vital to the story because if this took place in another school, the issue with ethnicity would not be as big of a deal.
