Native Americans had lived in America long before it was discovered by settlers. They even lived normal lives, according to their customs, however settlers came and claimed their land and tried to change their beliefs. Because of this it was clear that the new settlers and the Native Americans could not live together peacefully because their values and cultures were too different. In Sepulvedas' and Casas' papers they will talk about how the Native Americans are seen by the Spanish and how bias can effect how a group is seen. In Juan Gines De Sepulvedas' paper titled, “The Second Democrates,” he gives a description of how the Spanish should have the right to rule over the Native Americans because they are an inferior race. Sepulveda goes into detail to tell people that the Spanish showed gentleness and humility after having won the war with the Native Americans, by protecting them from other tribes. Later on in his writings, Sepulveda described the Native Americans as illiterate people, having no monuments to represent their history, except for the sad pieces of art they drew by hand. He showed in his writing how the Natives lived their lives, without the Spanish bias influence. Casas informed people, in his paper, “The Destruction of the Indies,” that Indians were not barbarians, but treated their family and friends with respect and dignity. Later in his paper Casas questioned Sepulveda about the war against the Indians and asked if it was necessary to get rid of the Indians, so called barbarism, because it seemed that the Spaniards were acting as the barbarians.
