The short film “Gould Meets Gould” is an example of seamless realism. This short film opens with a black screen and white letters showing the film’s title, “Gould Meets Gould.” It is literally about Glenn Gould, who argues with himself about the roles of artist and audience. Gould Meets Gould” is a radio program produced by Gould in which he interviews himself. Since seamless realism tries to disguise the illusion of realism, this film is an excellent example of the form. In the film, Gould is interviewing himself, but the film makes it look as if he is interviewing another person. Both characters are very expressive in their conversation with each other. Although there was music playing throughout the film that was not its main focus, neither was lighting or the set design, and certainly not color, because the film was in black and white. The film was also a documentary film. The reason I feel it was a documentary is based again on definition. The film was about a real person, Glenn Gould, who was a Canadian pianist and filmmaker. The short film with him in both roles documented him in two roles, one as the interviewed and the other as the interviewer. The information provided during the interview was facts about the career of Mr. Gould. The interviewer wanting to know about Mr. Gould’s musical career, but asked first asked if there was a subject that would be off limits during the interview. The answer he received was “music.” Without hesitation the interviewer rattled off part of the musical history in a quick statement by speaking of the controversy caused by Mr. Gould giving up live concert performances at the age of 32 years old and his refusal to communicate with an audience except through the media, this represented his future endeavors, and music represent his past. In order to gather details of what the interviewer felt was essential to discuss, the interviewed had to agree with what should be discussed and answer questions. That seemed to be the main contention between them. While attempting to explain why he did not feel discussing his musical career was import, Gould provided details about his radio career and the many interviews he had conducted. Also, the spectator learned that Gould was interested in the Natives rights in Alaska, another fact added to the documentary.
