When Grizzlies walked upright, is Native American myth, specifically a creation myth.The Modoc tribe created Grizzlies walked upright in the late 1400’s before the Europeans came to America. The short story is based on the “sky spirit” and how he created the earth and the creation of native Americans. The author's purpose in writing this short story is to explain how the native Americans came to be . For example “So he carved a hole in the sky with a stone and pushed all the snow and ice down below until he made a great mound that reached from the earth almost to the sky”. The mound that the “Sky spirit” made is known as Mount Shasta today . The native Americans also believe that he created all the animals of the land with the ends of his mysterious spirit stick and the moving of leaves. The animals provided where the ones in the story such as, fish, birds ,beavers, otters and the most enormous of them all was the Grizzly bears. One of the most crucial aspects of this short story in my opinion, is how events lead up to creating the Native Americans. I felt as if the sky Spirit was very unfeeling when he didn't want to take his unforgiving daughter back when he had witnessed that she had peculiar looking children with the Grizzly bear that she had crossed upon when the wind spirit wafted her away from the top mountain peer. Indians conclude that the children made by the Grizzly and the spirit daughter is how Native americans were created. I felt that is is how the author wanted to define the main aspect and climax of the myth. The style that the author put out in this short story is dramatic. There is a lot of
