“The Souls of Black Folks” by WEB Du Bois William Edwards Burkhardt also known as WEB Du Bois is one of the most incredible African American advocates in African American history. He was also a journalist, educator, writer and civil rights activist. Du Bios was born in February 28, 1868 and is from Great Barrington, Massachusetts. In 1895 WEB Du Bios become the first African American man to earn a Ph. D from Harvard University. He is also the co-founder of the NAACP, National Association for the Advancements for Color People. WEB Du Bios is very famous for his literature essay, The Souls of Blacks Folks. He was passing out cards and a young girl did not accept his card at that moment he realized that he was not like the other children and he identified himself a, “the problem.” De Bios realized at that your age for him to be recognized in society he must work harder and be brighter than any other white person. Du Bios continued on questioning God’s work and why did he make him, “the problem” or “a struggle.” Black Americans are the ones who have to live life with two identities that American society will not accept nor will the whites. Although African American were emancipated and physically out of chains their emotions and mental thoughts were still in chains because they were not given the resources and tools they needed to strive and survive in America on their own. Blacks didn’t know their rights back then because nobody educated them or even told them they had right. Blacks didn’t even have the opportunity to vote because society knows if they did they would be sitting at the table as a part of America and be able to make a better life for African Americans. Du Bios uses the word, “veil” to define that blacks Americans are not the same as white Americans and because those two are different whites will always be superior to blacks and will gain more privileged. Du Bois educationed himself on these songs because it is part of his history and African American history the he holds on too.
