What was the purpose of a title in this story? More often than not a title will directly relate to the story in some way or another. In most cases a title would be a form of telling the reader what to expect from the story before even reading it. For example, in many stories the title can be used to infer what the overall setup of the story may be. In this case the title does relate to the story very much. In order to understand the relation between the title and the story it would be beneficial to break down the title first. Then explain how the relation of the story to the title was based mostly on the overall plot of the story and how it was setup. Julian's mother was an old woman over the age of fifty who was out of shape so she was required by her doctor to take an exercise course. She was a very racist woman and this causes friction between her and her soon. In addition, she does not enjoy going to the classes on her own since her only form of transportation was public transportation and around when this was set busses were desegregated, so she makes Julian go with her. When a black man enters the bus Julian and his mother are on she says to Julian “Now you see why I won’t ride on these busses by myself.” (O’Connor 452)Julian was a ‘rebel’ of in a way, he does anything in order to get his mother upset.This was the ‘rising’ part of the title. Furthermore, the word converge means to come together from different directions so as eventually to meet. He does these things with the full knowledge that it upsets his mother(O’Connor 453). Such as leaving her side on the bus in order to sit next to a black man. Julian would do things to make his mother feel uncomfortable and he enjoyed to watch her squirm. But the title can and is misleading, by using the word converge it gives the sense that there would be some sort of resolution at the end of the story where in reality there is not. But in reality the use of the word converge is because of how all the rising actions such as the yelling, rebellion, and racial conflicts lead to the ending. The story does end quite abrupt with no real resolution, this could possible be due to the fact that the story did not need an ending and was left to the interpretation of the reader. The fate of Julian's mother is never truly stated which leaves it all up to
