In the book The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, a story is told to exemplify how war can change a person. It expresses the humane side of war, the struggle to overcome grief and how difficult it is to deal with death. The book releases strong emotions and allows the reader to really connect with the characters involved. Tim O’Brien enables the audience to feel the emotions emerging from the book by writing it as fiction.

Fiction allowed Tim O’Brien to create a character named Tim O’Brien to allow him to create ways in which O’Brien, the character, can reflect back on the events taking place in the books while expressing to the audience his feelings. This technique makes the reader feel as if this is a real person telling their story and reflecting back on it which enables the story to feel real to the reader. In the chapter “The Man I Killed”, this is a combination of the story and the thoughts of O’Brien’s characters. This chapter allows the reader to go on a journey through O'Brien's thoughts and forces the reader to better connect with Tim O’Brien. The chapter “Good Form” also uses metafiction by the character O’Brien, he tells the reader that by telling these stories it allows him to express the grief and pain that he felt. Through these personal statements he connects with the reader and allows them to empathise and feel how the character feels. This technique allows the reader to feel how the characters feel that they probably wouldn’t if they thought this work was fiction.
