In Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston is a tragic love story. The main character, Janie, experiences three different kinds of love. Throughout her life she soon learns that true, unconditional love comes on its own time. She finds that out when she meets the love of her life. Her first marriage was to Logan Killicks. This marriage was unwanted by Janie, but wanted by her grandmother. Logan put her to work as if she was another farm hand. She told her grandmother she wanted to love him but simply just couldn't. After a few months into this marriage, Janie realizes something about marriage. Janies states, “ Husbands and wives always loved each other, and that was what marriage was. it was just so.” (Hurston 25). Janie didn't like this marriage and it wasn't great. They went to Eatonville where he became mayor of the town, mayor Joe Starks. The people of Eatonville soon called Janie, Mrs. Mayor Starks. Janie loved being with Joe and being his wife.
