In the novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God”, the scene was set during the 1920’s or 1930’s in rural Florida. Janie Mae Crawford is a young woman raised by her grandmother (Nanny Crawford). Janie was married off by her grandmother to a wealthy middle aged farmer name Logan Killicks. This is where the Janie Mae Crawford’s journey of love, identity and independence begin.
The novel was written by Zora Neale Hurston during the 1930’s. Hurston is an anthropologist and a novelist. While studying voodoo in Haiti Hurston wrote the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. It took Zora Neale Hurston seven weeks to write this novel. She used a lot of her personal experiences as a guide to writing the novel. Janie’s mother was the product of the rape. Janie’s mother was also rapped, by her teacher, and Janie was the product of that rape. Janie is a light skinned black woman with beautiful long caucasion like hair. Janie lived her life at the expectations of other people, especially her grandmother. She loved her grandmother (Nanny) and respected her, on the other hand, she felt that she needs to live her life as she see fit. Nanny worries that Janie won't find a man with security. He was the true love she was waiting for. He wins Janie’s heart with his bubbly personality. Tea Cakes and Janie moved to the Everglades where they worked together in the fields. He treated her like she was a person, and his equal. Tea Cakes look at Janie as a partner that with working together they could accomplish things and still have time to spend together. Janie was happy, content and felt wanted. But there was one incident that Tea Cakes beat Janie. Which was confusing because he did love her and the beating only happened one time. Soon after a Hurricane was brewing and most of the people were leaving the Everglades. Tea Cakes, Janie and a friend (Motor Boat) decided to wait the storm out. Once the three returned back to the Everglades, Tea Cakes became ill. They find out he had rabies and he started to lose his sanity. He hallucinates and believes Janie is cheating on him. In a rage Tea Cakes pulls a pistol out on Janie and starts firing. Janie was able to reach for a rifle and tried to fire a warning shot but it hit Tea Cakes. The same day Janie is put on trial for murder. Janie spoke at her trail to tell her side of the story, but she spoke about how much she loved Tea cakes. The all white male jury found Janie innocent. After all, she has been through, Janie decided to return back home. In her third marriage Janie found love, independence and her own identity. Tea Cake gave her all these things,
