The Conflicts of Two Short Stories “Mary Maloney simply walked up behind him and without any pause, she swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head.” In the short story, There Will Come Soft Rains, includes a house that had one of a kind technology. This house is an empty house with not a soul inside due to a devastating explosion. The house is not destroyed in this horrific explosion, but later is destroyed from a burning fire. Lamb to the Slaughter is another short story that includes a husband and a wife, with whom the wife is pregnant with their first child. In Lamb to the Slaughter and There Will Come Soft Rains, both stories involve death. Firstly, in Lamb to the Slaughter The protagonist goes down stairs, gets a lamb leg, proceeds to go back up the stairs and kills her husband with it.(pg 2) Secondly, in There Will Come Soft Rains the city was killed by a bomb that lead to the death of many people.(pg 1) The house was the only thing to survive but later got destroyed by a blazing fire. In addition to the stories involving death they share the fact that both tried to stop the conflict. Lamb to the Slaughter had the conflict of the murder of the husband. Mary attempted to stop the conflict by feeding the murder weapon to the detectives investigating the murder (pg 4) and she also put on a show that the death was a complete and utter surprise to her. (pg 3) There Will Come Soft Rains the conflict included a fire. To stop the conflict the house’s water rats pistoled their water and the wall sprays let down water trying to extinguish the fire.
