Directed and written by Martin McDonagh, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri provides thematic parallels between the Civil Rights Movement and today regarding the purposeful negligence towards civil rights issues by community leaders. As protagonist Mildred Hayes paints billboards to confront the police department for not actively investigating the murder of her daughter, McDonagh illustrates the historical lack of intervention by those in power to diminish attention towards civil rights infringements, which provides a platform for those oppressed to construct a greater movement. Similar to Ebbing Police ignoring the death of Mildred’s daughter, school administrators and politicians not only disregarded the harassment of black community, but also placed blame on them for sparking violence in the Civil Rights Movement. However, an interesting contrast between the two platforms is that Mildred uses violence as a means of protest to further her frustration. In fact, she burns the entire police department down to show that Ebbing will be the same town if they did not have law enforcement. Furthermore, she decides to go on a roadtrip to find her daughter’s killer and murder him. Unlike Mildred, the Civil Rights Movement valued itself as non-violent because, according to Martin Luther King Jr., nonviolence “seeks to create such a crisis and establish such creative tension that a community that has constantly refused to negotiate is forced to confront the issue”.
