Overall from all the readings that were given, a clear message was being told. That message was that neither side wins. In Mark Twain’s “The Prayer”, he makes it seem like war is glorious, but it shouldn’t be glorified when war itself is horrific. He explains a war prayer that was being told then finishes off the story by saying, “It was believed afterward that the man was a lunatic, because there was no sense in what he said (3)”. It was clear that the man making the prayer to the patriots of war was claiming that he is sending a message from god and that god is amongst them. Being a part of it can scar a person beyond repair and traumatize them, lose loved ones, lose limbs, etc. In wars, neither side wins because both sides are at loss. What you experience within a war is beyond normal understanding. Those who don’t experience it first-hand doesn’t know how brutal the experience is. In the story, “The Things They Carried”, by Tim O’Brien, he explains the items that soldiers carry while in a war on duty. He would explain how they would carry out their daily routines, which can include marching, scoping out a perimeter, enacting in battle, witnessing a lost fellow soldier mate, etc. The story explained how war really is because the items carried. All the soldiers carried pounds of weapons and armor to protect themselves from the enemies they are facing. In the story, it explained how a lot of the soldiers died but specifically said, “When the dust-off arrived, they carried Lavender aboard. Afterward they burned Than Khe (993)”. Not only does it add insult to injury, but with the loss of a few lives follows with the deaths of much more. Both sides’ soldiers, citizens, and animals are all killed because of an overall
