Cole Christie Mr. VanAmburgh Literary Analysis Tracks Louise Erdrich, the author of Tracks takes readers as well as listeners on a visual journey of the life of three important Native Americans. The adventure begins with Nanapush an indian man who withholds high power being the only one left in his family due to weather conditions. Throughout the beginning of the novel, Nanapush has been the grandmaster on keeping the small indian family together. As time goes on, tensions arise between characters and the connection takes different routes. Near the beginning of the story Pauline was viewed to be closer as well as more connected to the other characters. As time went on, Pauline slowly grows apart from Fleur as well as nanapush. Pauline is almost in love with Fleur and her appearance which puts her in a position that sits below fleur. Throughout this story, a frequent question may be asked, why is this story being told? Nanapush, the grandmaster of this story is to enlighten Lulu, the granddaughter of Nanapush with facts about her mother. At the same time he is outputting all of these facts to Lulu he is trying to make Lulu forgive her mother at the same time. Nearing the end of the story it is Fleur and Pauline that receive challenges from each other whether they are able to complete them or not. A big scene that occurs within the two challenges is that Fleur is taking on the challenge of Christ which is to have a baby boy. Realizing that Fleur had obtained some health issues, she was going to go into premature labor which is when the baby is too young to become livable yet. Fleur knowing Pauline as someone who can help employs her to help with the procedure to simply stop the labor, unfortunately Pauline was unable to stop the labor process. While Pauline is not able to retrieve the Adler in Fleur’s operation, Pauline literally destroys Fleur’s winter store in the process which amplifies all of these chaotic happenings within this time. Soon after this incident pauline explained that she indeed “Moved away from her, fumbled in the woodbox, down in corners, tipped the water over, scalding my own leg, and had to boil it again. I do not know why the Lord overtook my limbs and made them clumsy, but it must have been His terrible will" (Erditch 157.) This is one of the many examples of Pauline acting unusual in one of her
