Change Characters? Characters change right? Well, who has changed the most in “The Watsons Go To Birmingham” the two semi-final candidates are Byron and Kenny. In my belief it’s Byron.

In the novel, “The Watsons Go To Birmingham - 1963” by Christopher Paul Curtis, Byron can be very mean to others unlike his little brother Kenneth Watson. Kenny can be mean but most of the time he is very nice, loving, and caring. Kenny treats others better than Byron because he does not physically hurt people on purpose, he shares with everyone, and he is very caring to one another. Kenny does not intentionally hurt anyone physically unlike Byron. On page 16, the passage states “if my lips were stuck on the mirror attach to the car, Byron would have done some real, cruel stuff.”
Reader’s Response In the book The Watsons Go to Birmingham” by Christopher Curtis, a boy named Kenny and his family live in Flint, Michigan. Flint is having a cold winter so Kenny’s family decides they will go to his aunt’s house. Kenny’s older brother, Byron, gets into trouble so they have to go to Birmingham. Kenny’s brother Joetta goes to Sunday school in Birmingham.

In my book a thirteen year old boy named Michael O’ Shaunessey is the main character. Michael changed from the beginning of the book to the end. Michael conquered his fear of heights. In the beginning of the book Michael was deathly afraid of heights. Michael and his friend Fritz were taking a test to become a SRD ( a level higher than the Hitler Youth).
The poem “Making Sarah Cry” and the play “The Watsons go to Birmingham” have the similar theme of being different. In “Making Sarah Cry” Sarah is different from the other kids on the playground. In “The Watsons go to Birmingham” the Watson family has a different skin color so they are separated from whites to do everyday tasks. The texts, both share a similar theme, but have different qualities. For example, in “Making Sarah Cry” only two people are excluded from playing with kids because of their differences.
The scene I chose to depict was when Kenny watson was being dragged down by a whirlpool (in the story the call it a “Wool Pool because that is how their grandmothers accent made it sound and Byron made up a story about it being Winnie the poohs evil twin brother), and Byron pulled him out and saved his life. I believe that this is the most important scene in the book because of what happens in it and how it affects Kenny and Byron in the rest of the book. One way it affects Kenny is in the way he now views traumatic, scary and possibly life threatening events by seeing what is coming as an inhuman, unnatural, and bloodcurdling and he sees it as the face of death. One way this event affects Byron is that he now visibly cares much more for Kenny
The setting in The Wastons Go to Birmingham is Flint, Michigan and Birmingham, Alabama. In the year 1963, Birmingham was known for civil rights movement. The year 1963 is a historically accurate date in history. People were protesting to gain equal treatment for blacks.
Honestly what is loyalty? One can’t even begin to define such a word. It’s one single seven letter word yet, it has a deep profound definition. Typically one does not use loyalty until they are put to the test. The test can be anything, like staying loyal to the patriots or staying loyal to your best friend.
Have you ever rode in a car for more than 24 hours? The plot in the book of “Watson’s Go To Birmingham”, is about a family going on a trip to Birmingham in 1963 and experience an event that makes them see how wrong color in the south are treated. The plot in the movie is more about how colored had been fighting for their rights and all the event leading up to everyone becoming equal. In “Watson’s Go To Birmingham”, lots of events changed the plot like the movie is focused mainly on Civil Rights while the book isn 't, but Joey leaves the church before it blows up in both, so there are some similarities. There are many differences between the book and the movie, like in the book they all stayed down at Grandma Sands, but in the movie the dad didn’t stay with them.
In fiction, the narrator controls how the audience connects to and perceives the various characters in a story. A good author can manipulate the narration to connect the audience to certain characters and deepen the reader’s understanding of their conflicts. In “Previous Condition” and “Sonny’s Blues,” James Baldwin illustrates themes of loneliness and isolation in the pursuit of finding a space that feels like home. Although this theme is clear in both stories, Baldwin is able to portray it very differently in each story through the relationship he allows the reader to the characters struggling with these feelings. While “Previous Condition” provides a more intimate relationship to the narrator, “Sonny’s Blues” is able to deliver an additional level of understanding by telling the story through Sonny’s brother, therefore disconnecting the reader in a way that forces him or her to share the characters’ feelings of isolation and confusion.
People read books to be transported to another world or to experience the life of someone else. Some of the best authors draw on their life in order to create a realistic and personal story. Charles Dickens uses this tactic in Great Expectations in the character of Pip to create a personal connection to Pip’s thoughts, character, and story. Charles Dickens uses the the autobiographical traits of a malicious mother, unsatisfying social rise, and the importance of education in Pip’s character. Both Pip and Charles Dickens experienced malicious mother figures whom they resented.
This comparison is based off the Although Nancy Drew has modern technology equipment to help her, Sherlock Holmes is a better detective because his powers of deduction, instinctual actions, and reliance on a sidekick help him be more efficient. Watson, Sherlock Holmes’ partner, is his long time friend throughout the Sherlock Holmes series. Having a strong bond with your partner can be vital to solve a case. On Page 3 Sherlock Holmes said, "but you are a conductor of light.” This quote from Sherlock Holmes is a phrase similar to the one in Stars Wars, “We are the spark that will light the fire that will burn the First Order down.”
