Plot Summary: The book begins with everything being the makings of an ideal summer of 1875. Fighting is at a low, crime is down and so are murders…. until a man by the name of Tom Chaney shoots Mattie’s father. Chaney immediately flees to the Indian territory where he thinks he is free from law enforcement or anyone that is out to harm him. Mattie is distraught over the fact that her father is now dead and seeks out the help from some other folks who wanted to help get their revenge on Tom Chaney. He is hated by several people, especially Mattie.

Ned Pepper: He is pure evil. He is extremely mean, forceful and he is a severely narcissistic. He gets so angry at one point he almost kills Mattie. He is also extremely ruthless in everything that he does.

Mattie: The main character of this story, her father gets murdered and Mattie Sets off on a trek to find him.

La Boeuf: One of the members of the group that are trying to hunt down Mattie’s father’s killer.

Setting (time and place): The setting of True Grit was the late eighteen hundreds in the Indian territory (modern day New Mexico and Arizona)

Mood:
The mood of True Grit is bravery. Bravery is shown all throughout the book. Being all alone with what seems to be the whole world against you Takes a lot out of anything Physically, mentally, and spiritually. The risk of death by wild animals and plants was huge but Mattie felt it was worth it to avenge because her father is already dead. Theme: The main theme of True Grit is revenge. Revenge is one of the main themes because the moment Mattie found out about her father’s death, Mattie Was ready to whatever it took to find the murder of her father (Tom Chaney). This book can teach us that revenge may not always be a bad thing but it is one of the options to life.

Irony: The obvious irony in this book is that Mattie Is so outraged by her father’s death Mattie Goes out to kill. This is so ironic because Mattie being so sad about her father’s death thinks it will make things better if Mattie Killed someone else.

Imagery: The main part of the imagery of True Grit was the snake pit. The snake pit helps you imagine Mattie’s true feelings at the current moment of the time Mattie Was at her lowest. Mattie Begins to rely on herself to survive and to survive with the group.
