Harriet Beecher Stowe's main idea for writing Uncle Tom's Cabin was to force people to not turn their backs on the horrible lives of the slaves. She wants to make all of the Northeners actually do something about slavery instead of them just saying that they want it to stop. You can tell that she strongly wants this to happen because, she says, "Do you say that the people of the free state have nothing to do with it, and can do nothing?"
